Madan KumarMar 11, '24

Maha Shivratri ( MahaShivaratri ) is a Hindu festival celebrated yearly in honour of Lord Shiva. This holy day is one of Hinduism's most important festivals, and it is observed with great excitement and respect. The event is held on the 13th and 14th nights of the Hindu calendar month Phalguna or Maagh (February/March).

The Legend of Mahashivaratri

Maha Shivratri, or "The Great Night of Shiva," is thought to be the night when Lord Shiva performs the holy dance. Shivarathri is also linked to the tale of the Samudra Manthan, in which the Devas (heavenly deities) and Asuras (demons) stirred the ocean to obtain a drink of eternity. During this cosmic incident, a container of poison appeared from the ocean, threatening to wipe out the planet. Lord Shiva, in his kindness, drank the poison to protect the universe, earning him the name Neelkanth, or the one with the blue throat.

Rituals and Traditions Associated with Mahashivaratri

During this festival, followers fast and perform different rituals to seek Lord Shiva's blessings and achieve spiritual enlightenment. Fasting is considered to cleanse the body and soul, allowing people to connect with the divine on a deeper level. Devotees go to Shiva temples and for prayers, and offer milk, honey, and bael leaves. People also stay awake all night, doing vigils, meditation, and reciting hymns and mantras in honour of Lord Shiva.

Celebrating Mahashivaratri Around the World

From the lively streets of India to the serene temples of Nepal and the quiet gatherings in Western countries, Mahashivaratri connects believers in a strong link of faith. In India, the celebrations are at their most intense, with elaborate ceremonies, prayers, and offerings taking place in temples and households. In Nepal, pilgrims gather at Kathmandu's famous Pashupatinath Temple to pray and perform rituals honouring Lord Shiva.
