Onam: A Festival of Unity, Joy, and Tradition

One of the most beloved holidays in South India is Onam, the beautiful harvest festival of Kerala. Onam is an important event that brings in a new chapter in the rich history of Indian festivities, as the lush landscapes of Kerala burst with colour and excitement.

When is Onam Celebrated?

Onam lasts ten days, with the biggest event taking place on the last day, known as Thiruvonam, during the Malayalam month of Chingam (August–September). This festival pays tribute to the mythical King Mahabali, whose reign is regarded as the most prosperous in Kerala's history. It is stated that his annual visit to his people is marked by Onam, a festival that symbolizes a season of happiness, equality, and abundance. Malayalees everywhere gather during the festival to celebrate their customs and culture, regardless of where they are in the world.

Elements of Onam Celebrations

In Kerala, people of all backgrounds come together to celebrate Onam, which crosses religious borders. It is a symbol of harmony, prosperity, and thankfulness for the abundant crop. Families come together, homes are decorated, and there is a sense of togetherness that makes Onam a truly special occasion.

Pookalam (Floral Designs): Creating elaborate flower carpets, or Pookalam, is one of the most beautiful Onam customs. From Atham to Thiruvonam, flowers are added to the pattern every day, making it larger. This signifies the welcoming of King Mahabali into homes.

Onasadya (Traditional Feast): Onam is incomplete without the grand Onasadya, a traditional vegetarian feast served on banana leaves. The Onasadya, which has up to 26 dishes—such as rice, sambar, avial, and payasam, a sweet dessert—reflects the prosperity of the harvest and the joy of sharing.

Boat Races: The famous Snake Boat Race, also known as Vallamkali, is one of the most exciting parts of Onam, especially in the backwaters of Kerala. In a thrilling race representing togetherness and community spirit, hundreds of oarsmen paddle long, snake-shaped boats.

Traditional Dance Forms: Kerala's rich cultural legacy is also on display during Onam, when traditional dance forms are performed. Two popular performances during the festival are Kathakali, an ancient dance-drama, and Thiruvathira, an elegant dance performed by ladies in a circle.

Pulikali (Tiger Dance): Another unique feature of Onam is Pulikali, where men paint themselves as tigers and dance to the beat of drums, adding a playful and energetic vibe to the celebrations.

The significance of love, unity, and shared history is highlighted by the Onam spirit that fills people's hearts. Families make memories over this period, ensuring that Onam customs continue for many years to come.
